An Introduction to Labor Unions

Trade Unions are an association comprised of a group of people usually working for the same company.  These are ordinary workers who don’t hold high ranks in the company and their purpose is to have a voice concerning company policies, wages and other issues that concern their working environment; among other things.  There could also be members who were former employees of the same company.

As in any other organized group, there are elected officers who will assume headship of the group in order to be more {systematized orderly}and ensure that the group will remain focused on their goals as one collective entity rather than working merely individual concerns.

The main focus of Labor Unions is to make certain that members get their just wage from the company; receive equal treatment from their employers; and basically make sure that none will be left behind when the company progresses and have security of tenure so as not to be easily dismissed by the company for unfair reasons.

While a minority of employers see Trade Unions as a threat to their security in terms of employer-employee relations; these organizations were primarily founded to oversee that employer-employee relations actually run as smoothly as possible.

Some unions are recognized by their companies while others remain underground making talks between union leaders and employers more difficult.  In order for unions to truly negotiate under lawful terms, they have lawyers to help them bring their concerns to the negotiating table. 

There are several ways that Trade Unions do in order for them to voice out their concerns to their employers.  Forums with employers and union members are one of the simplest and most peaceful ways for both unions and employers to understand the others’ concerns.  If all goes well, a compromise is reached and both parties are satisfied with the benefits of the talks.

Unfortunately, there are disputes between employers and employees that are not easily negotiated for whatever reason.  When this happens, extreme measures are undertaken by the unions such as organizing strikes, mass walk-out from work or refusal to return to work until their needs are met.

While these may seem like extreme measures, unions are compelled to take this action if only to make their point in the hopes that the concerned company will hear them out; and be open to negotiations.
