You’re buying an air conditioner.  You want to keep things cool and you’re not afraid to spend a little money to get the top of the line system.  You can buy a unit that’s rated for your home’s approximate square footage or you can spend a little bit more for a bigger unit that can cool a larger space.

What would be your choice?  Many people will spend that little extra to get the bigger air conditioner.  Bigger is better, you think.  You’re worried about not having enough power to handle the hot days and you know that a little bit more pwoer will insure sufficient cold air to keep things comfy no matter how nasty it gets outside.

Here’s what you don’t think about:  The reasons why buying too much air conditioner will backfire on you. 

The fact of the matter is that buying an air conditioner that’s a bigger unit will cool things down faster.  Much faster.  But that’s a problem.  You’ll hit the desired temperature in record time.  Then, the AC will shut off.  And eventually the temp will increase ever-so-slightly and the massive system will pop back on again.  Within seconds, you’ll be cooled down again.  The process will then repeat itself.

That rapid on/off cycling is one of the fastest ways to put disabling wear and tear on an air conditioner.  Thus, running a “big boy” when you don’t need one will result in a faster degradation of the unit.  That’s not cost-effective.

And it’s not very quiet, either.  All of that on and off can get aggrevating.  Especially when you’re using a bigger system that produces more noise than a smaller one.

There’s another problem, too.  The bigger AC units use more electricity than their smaller counterparts–a fact that becomes very evident when you compare the quantity of power used when a unit cycles on after being off.  You see where this is going, right?  You’re cycling the big unit to death, which is also jacking up your electric bills.

The solution is simple.  Buy the right air conditioner in the first place.  Resist the urge to buy a huge unit if you don’t need one.  The idea of having a little extra “oomph” may sound appealing, but it’s really a bad decision.  You’ll wear down your new AC in a hurry and you’ll spend more for the privilege of damaging the expensive equipment.

So when buying an air conditioner – bigger isn’t better.  Not when it comes to air conditioners.  You don’t want to go too small, but you don’t want to go too large either.  You need to find an air conditioning system that was designed for a home like yours.

Here’s the deal. In the heat of summer, you’re gonna run the ol’ AC to maintain a tolerable indoor temperature.  That means you’re going to use electricity like it’s going out of style.  The power company will issue you a bill that may make you sick to your stomach.
That is a sad state of affairs.  It’s even sadder when you consider the fact that it is completely avoidable.  No, you aren’t going to make it through the summer without your air conditioner.  You can, however, keep things cool without spending a fortune.

There are probably 101 different easy ways to use a little less power to keep things cool.  If you did just a few of them, you could cut your costs so much that you’d stop writing those nasty memo comments on the checks you write to the electric company.

Check Your Ducts

One of the best ways to cut your AC costs has absolutely nothing to do with your air conditioner unit.  A great deal of cooling inefficiency stems from flaws in ductwork.  That maze of “piping” that connects your AC to the registers might be the reason it costs so much to maintain a reasonable temperature during the summer.

If your ducts suffer from any clogs, poorly aligned, or have gaps through which cold air can leak, your air conditioner is forced to push out extra cold air to get the job done.  That means more power and higher expenses.  In this economy, that’s the very last thing most of us need.

So check out your ducts.  Keep a close lookout for those gaps and holes.  Patch them up immediately.  If you don’t feel like you’re up to the task, you can call in a professional.  This is a “do it yourselfer”-friendly project, but some folks are going to feel better if they hire an AC tech to do the work.  You will need to pay the tech if you go that route, but you may very well end up making that money back in record time, depending on the condition of your duct work.

The experts say that a surprising amount of energy is completely wasted because of bad ducts.  If you haven’t inspected yours for awhile, you might be suffering financially because of it.

The moral to the story:  Get your ducts in a row.  Lose the obstructions, lose the leaks.  If you do, you can get on the fast track to using less power and spending less money on your air conditioning.
