You can’t sneeze these days without some clever so-and-so in the vicinity making a joke about having swine flu, with a smirk on his/her face. I suppose that’s a good sign, since if the pandemic really had taken off there would have been general panic and nobody would dare joke about it. The rate of spread has until now been relatively quiet, given the potential wide spread. But to become lax and off guard about this would be rather silly. Clearly the risk of the spread escalating is still a serious one. In the UK the health service recently distributed a leaflet to every household in the country about how to prevent the spread of swine flu germs.The basic message of the pamphlet is this: “if you sneeze, do it in a tissue, then throw it away, then wash your hands, then wash your body, then cover yourself in paraffin and let it evaporate off your body”. (ok ok the last part was a lie). I guess my point is that if governments are willing to take their public education that far it means they too see it as a real threat, worth potentially upsetting us.

Well, tissues aside, a UK company that specialises in air conditioners has come up with a novel and potentially important way of preventing swine flu. According to JS Humidifiers’ blog, an air purifier could be effective in trapping and removing particles of swine flu virus from the air before it has a chance to spread.Usually, people use air purifiers to prevent allergic reactions and cleanse the air of pollutants.But with most purifiers, fitted with HEPA air filters, they can block particles as tiny as 0.3 micrometers. The minute particles that make up the swine flu virus are just like normal flu particles, at approximately 100 nanometers in size – an air purifier would be able to trap and stop these particles in their tracks.  Even more effective are those air purifiers fitted with a UV lamp, which fire ultra violet light at the air particles that pass through them, killing airborne viruses in the process.

This is really a remarkable discovery. Instead of relying on people who may be infected with swine flu to sneeze into a tissue and constantly wash their hands, imagine the increased containment of having air purifiers fitted in public places like schools and offices! Maybe this is something that governments in the UK and around the world could think about in their contingency planning. And maybe this summer when you are considering buying a portable air conditioner for the home or workplace, you might think about cleansing the air as well as cooling it.

Air conditioners which move from one room to another on casters are known as portable air conditioners. Some air conditioner can get pretty big, but their wheels make it very easy to move them. Obviously a portable air conditioner is designed to cool you down. But what are they and how do they work. Like a central air conditioning unit or a window unit they work to transform your hot air to cool dry air. But unlike a window unit they do not require permanent installation. This usually means you need a hose or tube that will run from your unit to a window or door where the unit can be vented.

For example a 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner should be sufficient to cool a room that measures about 28 square meters. If the room gets a lot of direct sun it will need a bigger unit to cool the same space.

Most portable air conditions will be in the range of 25 to 35 inches tall. The typical weight for these systems is between 60 and 80 pounds. They come with wheels so moving them around a house or apartment is not a major deal but packing it up stairs or from location to location might require some help. But the flexibility that they offer you is a huge help in keeping your energy costs down or cooling a space that you might not otherwise be able to cool. You might also consider that some of the units come with heating units as well which makes them even more worth the investment as you can use the same unit year round.

Before you run out and buy one remember you need to calculate the size of the rooms you want to cool and be sure and get a unit that produces sufficient BTUs to accomplish the job. Also note that some units offer adjustable setting like low, medium and high to help save energy in smaller rooms but get the job done on larger ones.

Portable air conditionars are made by a number of  manufacturers like Delonghi, Fedders, Toyotomi, and Danby. Portable air conditioners offer a very versatile cooling option for those who can’t use more conventional air conditioning methods, but they do have limitations that users need to be aware of due. Their power is limited to their size.

Where does the condensation go? Condensation (or moisture) is a byproduct of the air-conditioning process. Many portable air conditioners use that condensation to enhance the cooling cycle. Any excess vapor is discharged through the exhaust hose.
