Client Relations – The way forward

For freelancers, the very first impression is the most important. When you first meet a new potential client, its important that you provide them with an impression of you that allows them to relate to you on a personal level other than on a purely professional/business level.

The most important paramater for successfull entrepreneurs is the human relations you generate. It is important that your clients or potential clients you meet feel you are more than capable on a professional level, but you also need to generate a human contact. Focusing on the business at hand is easy, and can impress the client with the knowledge you have. It’s all about caring for the customers.

Before meeting, be sure to do some homework first. Look them up on the homepage, they are sure to be on the companys homepage or have a personal blog somewhere. Try to locate them on LinkedIn, and if there is a connection, you can research further details about them. Make a search for their name on google and see what you can come up with. There are several things you can research to learn about your potential customer. This knowledge is very valuable in knowing how to treat them, or with interesting talking points during the conversation.

When you first meet a potential client in person, be sure to smile a lot,  and try not to focus on the actual business you’re there to discuss with them. Present small anecdotes and do not be afraid to tell anecdotes from your personal life either. You are not there to tell them about yourself, but be sure to open the lid, and shed some light on yourself.

After a period of time, focus the attention back to the reason you are there for. That will show the client that not only are you easy-going and talkative, but also professional, and you will set yourself in the drivers seat, and guide the conversation. The client is interested, so make sure that they feel confident in you as a freelancer.

Send an e-mail as soon as the meeting is over, at least before the end of the day. In here you briefly outline what you talked about and what you agreed upon.

Remember, if you can expand the professional level you are on, you can perhaps expand the business side of things, but its also a good help if something goes wrong with the project you are working on.
