Did you grasp that the Prison authorities allowed Nancy and Phillip Garrido to meet and marry in Leavenworth Penitentiary in Kansas whilst he was serving a 50-year federal sentence for kidnap and violent sexual assault?. She was 26 and he was 30. His psychiatric evaluation diagnosed him as a “sexual deviant and chronic drug abuser”.

So even though we knew him to be a known ‘sexual deviant’, in prison to protect society from him, we didn’t protect Nancy either from him or herself. We put them together and then let them get married! How could we let this happen!

The issue of Prison Marriages needs to be re-examined!

Did we allow a sexual deviant, Phillip Garrido, to enmesh a mentally frail, vulnerable Nancy? Or was Nancy a willing female pedophile?

Maybe one of society’s last taboos is the concept of ‘female pedophiles acting alone’. When a couple is present we assume the woman is coerced. Society cannot accept that if a man is present that the woman is a willing participant.Thereby taking away any responsibility she has for the abuse of the child. Society is unwilling to acknowledge that the woman is an enthusiastic participant.

Female sexual abuse is much more threatening to the fabric of our society- it undermines our core beliefs and feelings about how women should relate to children.

Would you concede that Nancy is a female pedophile? Was Nancy forced or acted willingly?

Even after the trial there is no guarantee that the truth will out but that still doesn’t deal with the fact. We paid for the wedding!

Garrido was convicted of kidnap and rape and began serving a 50-year federal sentence on June 30, 1977, at Leavenworth Penitentiary in Kansas. In a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation, Garrido was diagnosed as a “sexual deviant and chronic drug abuser.”

At Leavenworth, Garrido met Nancy Bocanegra, who was visiting another prisoner, her uncle. On October 5, 1981, Phillip Garrido and Nancy Bocanegra were married at Leavenworth. So the marriage was in 1981 even though Phillip Garrido was not let out until 1988. Seven years later. Did they get conjugal rights for those seven years?

Let me reiterate my question. Did we place a weak and vulnerable woman under the power and control of a diagnosed incarcerated “sexual deviant” or are women pedophiles much more responsible for their abuse of children than society wishes to admit?

The 1st Public photographs of Jaycee Lee Dugard are published by People Magazine. Jaycee said, “I’m so happy to be back with my family”, she told the magazine. “Nothing is more important than the unconditional love and support I have from them.” How marvellous Jaycee looks. Jaycee looked radiantly happy, healthy, with a great broad smile and gorgeous long brown hair over her shoulders.

Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped in 1991 when she was just 11 years old. Jaycee was abducted as she took a walk to the school bus stop within sight of her home in South Lake Tahoe, California. Carl Probyn, Jaycee’s stepfather, was in the garage entrance to their family home, watched Jaycee walk towards the school bus stop a short distance away. The family’s world fell apart when a woman then grabbed Jaycee and hauled her into a gray sedan before speeding off. Carl got on his bicycle, pedaled furiously after the car but lost it.

Angel, 15, and Starlit, 11, are Jaycee’s daughters, apparently fathered by Phillip Garrido, 58; a registered sex offender who police say raped her repeatedly over the years. The yard at the rear of Garrido’s home close to Antioch, CA, is were Jaycee and her girls lived, never attending school in all those years or ever seeing a Doctor.

The property is actually owned by his ailing mother who resides there with Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, 54.

Overhanging Mimosa trees, dense shrubbery and a high solid fence hid Jaycee’s, Angel’s and Starlit’s shabby world of tents and shacks from the outside world .It was in this hidden area of unclean canvas tents, tarpaulin, wooden shacks and debris that Jaycee and her two daughters lived.

Now Phillip and Nancy Garrido face a combined total of 29 felony charges, including forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment in connection with the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991.  Garrido remains in custody at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, California, as he and his wife Nancy Garrido await trial.

Jaycee and her two daughters are now living in seclusion with her mom, Terry Probyn, 50, and family. A family spokeswoman said Jaycee was riding horses, cooking meals and thinking of collaborating on a book.

We should not let these photos give us a reason to dismiss what Jaycee has had to suffer all these years or forget even for a moment that experiences like these take years of therapy to even begin to return to some sort of normality.

They do however give us all hope. The sort of hope that comes from seeing another human being putting on a heartwarming smile even after suffering 18 years of hell.

It is truly inspiring.
