Improve the Water Quality of Your Home for Better Health
The purpose of water filtration systems is to eliminate impurities from household water. Generally, the mechanism of carbon or reverse-osmosis filtration is utilized by most machines. When picking up a water filtration system for yourself, verify the endorsement by NSF International, which has established the standards. A good option is Brita water filters.
What you ought to do first is test your water so you understand what kind of water filtration system your family requires. It will be up to you whether you purchase a faucet-mounted system that is inexpensive and quick to install but has to have frequent filter changes, or an in-line system, which needs to be hooked up directly to your water pipes. Even though the second system is more expensive, it is more thorough, and rarely needs filter changes.
In the case of either system, check out the NSF-certified carbon filter and find out if the test came back with chloroform, detergents or organic substances. Carbon filters are not useful against mercury or other heavy metals, chloroform, or some microbial contaminants.
Select a reverse-osmosis in-line water filtration system for houses where organic contaminants, chloride, lead, nitrates, or sodium are present as a result of your water test. You should realize that a reverse-osmosis system purifies a relatively small amount of drinking water while it wastes disproportionately large quantities of water. If your water’s calcium particulate percentage is high, you’ll benefit from a water softener alongside this system. You should look into getting PUR water filters for your home.
Consider a water filtration system with a cutoff meter, also called a performance indication device which will inform you with regard to when to swap out filters.
Aquasana Complete Countertop Filtration System AQ-4000: This patented twin cartridge drinking water filter can be connected in a snap on regular kitchen faucets and gives you nearly 30 gallons every hour of crystal clear, high-quality water for use in beverages or food. The replacement filters cost $48.00, and will last for 6 months or 500 gallons, working out to less than 10¢ a gallon or $8.00 a month for a readily available supply of safe water.
Puritec Purity UCD-12C Under-the-sink Filter: This water cleanser employs an NSF rated granular activated carbon (GAC) to get rid of over 99% of chlorine and remove nearly 99% of the lead, pesticides, herbicides, VOCs, and benzene, at the same time curing unpleasand flavors and smells. An exceptional 12,000 gallon volume establishes this filter as the most cost effective water filtration system that is offered right now. The ceramic pre-filter blocks 99.99% of unsafe bacteria, in addition to organisms like cryptosporidium and Giardia. The UCD-12C provides crystal clear, clean drinking water while leaving in healthy minerals such as Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium. This water filtration system comes in a package with an easy installation kit and a stainless steel faucet spigot. Also, Brita & PUR water filters are amongst the best in the industry.
Juicing Your Way to Optimal Health
If you have heard of Jack La Lane, then you ought to be a fan of juicing for health. La Lane has long been live confirmation that selecting homemade juice over commercially juices is the solution for living longer and healthier.
A Jack LaLane Power Juicer Elite is a reasonably priced machine that you are able to keep in the kitchen to perpetually encourage your whole household to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juices daily. When you purchase store bought fruit juices, you are continuously putting entirely too much sugar and many unpronounceable preservatives and compounds into your body. Beyond that, you ought to know that those store bought juices have gone through so much processing that many of the vitamins and minerals they are purported to have are almost completely gone when finally they are shipped to your store.
As with many grains, meats, and dairy products, fruits and vegetables exhibit the innate propensity to lose their vitamins and minerals when stored for very long, and specifically if they are cooked or cooled. For this reason it is best that you purchase a juicer such as the Jack La Lane juice maker and drink your fruit juices right from natural fruits and vegetables.
Every Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Elite comes with top quality stainless steel blades that it utilizes for working juice out of the day’s fruits and veggies. This machine boasts of 30% more ability to make quality extracts than the majority of other juicers that you can find. Aside from that, a Jack La Lane juicer does its job quietly, in contrast to other juicers which contain motors needing 450 to 850 watts to do their job.
Because of the capacity of your Jack La Lane juice extractor to remove a larger amount of juice from the ingredients you feed into it, the remaining pulp is drier. Your pulp can be made into something else so don’t throw them away just yet. You can use it for your garden as fertilizers. Additionally, certain recipes for cookies ask for dried fruit or vegetable pulp, that can come from this juicer.
Unfortunately, a Jack La Lane juice extractor is not flawless; this product has a few drawbacks, therefore you need to be aware of them and be willing to accept them before you buy then make juice with this product.
Several owners have posted negative reviews complaining about the evident incapacity of this model of juice extractor to work for very long. Certain people have actually complained that the juicer did not survive for a month. Of course, there are likely to be other issues contributing to this – like maybe using this juicer as if it were a commercial juicer instead of the machine it actually is.
Putting in entire fruits, or many hard seeds, or even thick-hulled fruits and vegetables could really beat up not simply on the motor but the blades also. This is not to say that you are not able to process carrots and apples in your Jack La Lane juice maker, this is simply to remind you that most juice machines are not engineered to have an entire pineapple jammed into it. Any home kitchen appliance will have boundaries, and many of them perform perfectly if you know and respect that.
The Jack La Lane juicer is intended for light juicing- the sort of juicing that one family will do at home. However if you could justify buying a more powerful juicer, a La Lane extractor is not for you.
RTA Cabinets: Are They Right For You?
Before you ask, RTA is not a brand name. Rather it stands for Ready to Assemble. Most kitchen cabinets that you buy online will be RTA. When you’re replacing kitchen cabinets, you should give careful consideration to RTA cabinets, as they’re often less expensive and of a higher quality than their ready made counterparts.
Pre-built cabinets are usually more likely to be damaged in shipping and less well built than the less expensive RTA kitchen cabinets. Many people have a great fear of the complexities of assembling them. While understandable, that fear’s pretty unjustified.
The ready to assemble cabinets of today come equipped with special hardware that makes them extremely easy to put together. You usually only need a single screwdriver and a drill to assemble the cabinets. This is due to a joining system known as a cam lock. There are two different cam lock systems, plastic cam locks and metal cam locks.
Most RTA kitchen cabinets are built mainly from plywood, with plywood tops, sides, and bottoms. Sizes can vary, but shelves tend to be made from 5/8 plywood. Drawer boxes are often made of plywood, as well. Drawer slides are either side mounted or under mounted, though most manufacturers make them side mounted. Soft closing and self closing drawer slides are sometimes available–they’re under mounted and tend to be fairly expensive. You might have a choice of hardware, like exposed or European pulls and handles, with some models.
Kitchen cabinets from big box stores sometimes use low quality materials like cardboard and particle board. You usually don’t have to worry about this with RTA cabinets, as they’re usually made of the aforementioned plywood, which is far more durable than those other materials. In addition, chances are that RTA cabinets will have dovetail construction for drawers, as opposed to some of the big box kitchen cabinet stores that simply glue their drawers together. Higher quality RTA cabinetry will also have finished the inside of their cabinets with a clear coat sealer. This enables the cabinets to be cleaned much easier than others.
Pay special attention to what type of assembly instructions you’ll receive with your new cabinets. Some manufacturers of RTA kitchen cabinets will gladly offer you a sample of their instructions. Manufacturers’ websites may even have instructions. Read any sample instructions you can find to ensure that they’re easy to understand. You may also find a toll free number to use if you have problems during the assembly. This too is a mark of the higher quality online stores of RTA kitchen cabinets.
To ensure good quality, check into the credentials of any store you buy RTA cabinets from, and make sure they offer some sort of guarantee. It’s much better to deal with a reputable company when buying RTA kitchen cabinets, as this ensures high quality, long lasting, and easy to assemble cabinets that will last you for years.
Which Type of Kitchen Cabinets Are Right for You?
There are quite a few choices and prices out there for homeowners looking to replace or upgrade their kitchen cabinets. How can you make a decision?
First, a little education is in order. To start, it’s best to learn about the materials used in your cabinets, including the differences between particle board and medium density fiber or MDF board. Normal fiber board is inferior to standard quality MDF board. It’s an engineered product, and it’s made from residuals of both soft and hard woods. Resin and wax are used to bind and solidify wood residuals after they’re broken down into component fibers. Finally, MDF panels are formed into boards by machines that use tremendous pressure and heat. MDF boards are called “engineered wood”, since they’re made from wood.
Regular particle board or fiber board is not as dense. It contains larger wood chips and shavings, thus creating a product that contains more air holes than MDF does. It’s also man made. Both particle board and MDF are used to make some cabinets and both require a wood veneer to make them more attractive. Both particle board and MDF tend to disintegrate when too much moisture is allowed to fill the boards. While both types of board are treated to deal with some water, if any amount of water stands it will swell and lose its shape.
As to the veneers that are applied to either, you will have a choice between wood veneers and non-wood veneers. Wood veneers are the more expensive of the two options.
Kitchen cabinets made from real woods as opposed to a composite tend to cost quite a bit. You’ve got a lot of choices when considering a wood. Common cabinet woods are cherry, oak, maple, and walnut. Many of these îall woodî cabinets will have in lieu of particle board construction; they will use plywood boxes instead. Real wood cut into very thin strips is used to make a plywood. The strips are laid down in different directions for extra strength and finally it is all glued together. The plywood process is complete when high-temperature machinery turns the glued strips into a large sheet or panel of plywood. The grades used to judge plywood are similar to the grading system used in most American schools. Cabinets constructed an ìAî is of higher quality than a ìCî for example. Plywood is referred to as extremely high tensile, which means that it will last for many years and can hold an exceptionally heavy amount of weight.
Another term that you should know, especially if you are looking at kitchen cabinets online, is RTA. RTA stands for Ready to Assemble. These cabinets are shipped in various pieces to you, ready to be assembled by a consumer, and you’ll have to attach and build everything, including drawers, hinges, and more. Everything will be supplied for you to assemble your kitchen cabinets. There are two major advantages to RTA cabinets. First of all, they’re easier to ship, which means lower costs for you and a lower chance of damage for the cabinets. RTA kitchen cabinets are engineered to be very easy to assemble.
At least now you are armed with many of the terms youíll see used when you go hunting for kitchen cabinets. You will find that there are literally hundreds of thousands of variations of woods, finishes and doors. Finally your dream kitchen will be one step closer.
Is It Time to Spruce Up Your Home
We have been living at our house for 12 years now and some of the rooms are looking rather old and dated.
Unfortunately both the kitchen and bathroom seem to have reached the point of no return and it looks like a total revamp is going to be needed.
The dilemma is where do you start? Currently there appears to be a vast amount of kitchens and bathrooms on the market. Should you be considering a modern theme, maybe traditional, or perhaps just go for the wow factor?
Currently some of our local DIY shops are offering great deals on their kitchens and bathrooms, but is buying at the local DIY store always the best decision?
Maybe you might be best suited buying direct from a specialist company. Currently some of the larger companies have some absolutely fantastic deals on offer. If you like you can choose Interest Free payments over a 2 year period, maybe for the kitchen you could get all of your electrical appliances thrown into the deal. The choice is yours with the current economic market, and if you shop around you will be able to play the companies against each other, thereby ensuring you get the very best deals on offer.
Even though you may seem to be getting a great deal, please bear in mind that these companies are still making a profit out of you. Why not try and push just that little bit harder to see how far they will drop their prices, after all you have nothing to loose by trying.
When decorating your room, an important factor is choosing the right accessories. Accessories for the kitchen can make or break a room. They have to enhance the room and fit in with the style you have chosen for your kitchen. The bathroom seems to be a bit of an easier room to decorate. Accessories for the bathroom can be easily mixed and matched, and changed from month to month.
The problem now is if we decorate both the kitchen and bathroom, our lounge is going to look a bit old and tired. Probably it could be a good idea to invest in some ethical homeware. Having these would certainly brighten up the room and would not have to cost a fortune. It looks like with all this work going on at home, it is going to be a very busy couple of months.

A Makeover For Old Kitchen Cabinets – Making the Old New Again
Painting your old kitchen is the best way of giving them a new and fresh look, and would not be that expensive. However, before painting, you have to thoroughly clean the cabinets first. When you are ready to clean the cabinets, remove the doors and hinges, and use an all-purpose cleaner to wash them, after that wash them over with TSP and allow drying. Keep in mind though that paint will not stick to stained or varnished surfaces.
As you will begin, you have to:
Mask the floors, countertops and appliances before starting
You can use a sandpaper that is a fine grit, to give every surfaces of the cabinet a bit of light sanding
Put on some primer if you are not painting the kitchen cabinets a similar color
You have to use a high quality brush in applying the paint
Sand lightly with the fine grit sandpaper soon as the first coat is done and it is completely dry
You can have three coats if your cabinets are made of heavy wood, but two coats will be just fine
If you only apply a single thick coat, there is a possibility that it will peel right off
Always be patient and take your time in doing the procedure correctly
Another way of giving your kitchen a pristine look is to simply change those that have been damaged, outdated, or have tarnished hardware. Your kitchen hardware ought to be complimentary with your existing or new cabinets, and as a whole, with your kitchen.
Wood grained cabinets will definitely clash with shiny metal fittings, but those wood grained cabinets that have high gloss fittings can be matched up with modern designs. However, as a rule, dark hardware will go best with light finishes, or simply vice versa.
Take some measurements, the sizes, locations and the spacing of the screws. If it is impossible to use the original holes with your new set of hardware, use a black plate, and a metal plate that will fit in between the wooden surfaces and the knobs or pulls to be mounted. If you are choosing some hinges, it is best to get some expert advice. If their sizes do not match or fits badly to your doors then the probability of sagging exists.
If you want to replace your countertops, there are tons to choose from, such as glass countertops that will bring a glaze to a modern kitchen, soapstone, quartz counterparts that are the combination of quartz crystals and resin, and marble or granite.
