Swimming Pool Landscaping

A lifelong ambition of putting a swimming pool in your garden has just been achieved, and in your mids eye you can visualise the fantastic parties, barbecues and social evenings with friends, by the pool during the long summers for years to come. The challenge of landscaping your swimming pool is the only thing that stands in the way of your first big party. swimming pool landscaping can seem like a daunting task, but if you follow these ideas your poolside will look amazing.

Swimming Pool Landscaping Begins With The Right Fence And Decking

Fencing a swimming pool is a major safety precaution that every pool owner needs to follow. In fact, many cities require fences as a part of getting a swimming pool permit. Since your fence will be a major focal point around your pool take the time to choose one that will look attractive next to your house and provide a great backdrop for swimming pool landscaping. Don’t make the mistake of placing your fence too close to your pool, or you won’t have room to place plants around your pool.

The type of pool you have will determine the way that you surround your pool. Above ground pools often have wrap around wooden decks and in ground pools are often wrapped in cement sidewalks or flagstones. The shape of the pool, type of fence surrounding it, and the type of swimming pool landscaping ideas you have, will have a big bearing on the type of decking you choose.

Swimming Pool Landscaping And Plant Choice

When you are landscaping your swimming pool area, sometimes the plants you don’t choose are as important as the plants you do choose. Many people like the idea of shade around the pool, but planting trees around the pool means you will be cleaning leaves out of the pool on a regular basis. Evergreen shrubs are the best, they help keep your pool clean and provide plenty of shade.

There is always the temptation to plant flowering shrubs or high fragrant flowers by your poolside. As beautiful as a flowering bush can be, it can also be a haven for bees. If you don’t want to deal with bee stings at pool parties, skip the types of shrubs that attract these insects.

Planting your shrubs, plants and flowers in containers and spreading them around the pool area is a great way to add greenery near your pool.

Surround Your Yard With a Hedge

When landscaping your yard you want to find things that will complement each other. Hedges along with flowers and trees can make for a dramatic enterance to your home. Planting hedges to ensure some privacy is an ideal way to incorporate them into your overall design.

You can think of hedges as walls that grow and breathe. Evergreen include both broad leaf and standard needle types and deciduous shrubs include lilac, rose of Sharon, azaleas and forsythias, just to name a few. Your choices when it comes to such shrubs will be strongly affected by your choice to have flowers in the warm months, or continued privacy in the cold months. Evergreen is a stand out choice for year round privacy.

Think about using evergreen broadleaf for privacy, holly is a good example. Their prickly leaves discourage both people and animals from entering your yard, potentially protecting your vegetation. In cold, windy climates where you are required to put up a snow fence each winter, many municipalities will accept a proper hedge in lieu of fencing. Hedges are unquestionably more beautiful than an orange net fence. Your local landscaping expert will have many ideas to help you decide.

For summer time beauty there are a variety of flowering shrubs that can be included in your landscaping. Forsythia is often the first of the spring bloomers. As soon as the winter snows start to melt, forsythia shrubs send out busts of yellow, cheerful flowers that will make you smile in anticipation of the returning warmth of spring. Azaleas, a much shorter shrub, can be used to make moderate hedges, and produces beautiful blooms in dozens of colors. While flowering shrubs can make beautiful hedges and give you some privacy during the warm months, come winter they lose their leaves and they spent the cold weather bare and see through.

For taller hedges you might want to consider adding some arborvitae trees to your landscaping. These Cyprus relations grow more like shrubs and don’t tend to reach the heights of traditional Cyprus trees. The can provide a good windbreak, a wonderful boarder or just privacy in a large area. They grow well in zones 2-7, making them ideal for a large portion of the country.

Trinning your hedge to give it a formal look can also become a great way to release stress. A hedge is, after all, composed of various plants placed closely together, and each will grow in its own way and at its own pace. The result is disharmonious. Properly pruned hedges will be wider on the bottom than on top. This allows adequate light to reach the bottom of the plant. Invest in a light but effective hedge trimmer and use stakes, string and guides, placed before you start, to create an even line and appropriate look for your landscaping. If you try to shape a hedge by eye, you will end up with an uneven mess.

A hedge can become a wonderful maze with a little work. The hedge can add more then beauty to your landscaped yard, it can add elegance as well. Well worth the effort of planting and maintaining, hedges have been with us for centuries, and will be here for a long time to come.

Using Perennials, Such As The Simple Yarrow, in Landscape Gardening

A large number of people now completely appreciate that a gorgeous well kept garden can add a surprisingly large amount of extra cash value to their home. Further to this, a cleverly designed yard can seriously add to the amount of useful space for your family and you. Because of these reasons, and some others besides, landscaping has, over time, increased to become an incredibly popular hobby. Top of the agenda for most gardeners is a gorgeous annual display of colorful and varied flowers.

While many landscape gardeners opt to add color by using annuals, the remainder decide that using  perennial plants is the best solution.  Annual flowers are those plants which {grow, flower and die|germinate, develop, bloom and die} in only the single year whereas perennial garden plants will continue to bloom year upon year. Of course there are advantages and minus points for both annuals and perennial garden fowers and landscaping is all about choosing the the most suitable blend of the two.

A large number of people experience emotional remembrances of long gone days spent in a grandfather’s garden enjoying the wonderous aromas of many old fashioned popular perennial flowers. Unfortunately it can be rather problematic for even the most keen gardener (including some experienced professionals) to emulate gardens of the past because a large number of the varieties (of species) are no longer available. You will be happy to hear that many of the old fashioned varieties have been superseded by strains which are much more resistant to disease, so you can often find suitable replacements which show little or no (other) differences to the older plant.

Traditional Garden Perennials

One of the most popular perennials used in landscape gardening today is the Achillea which first appeared in American gardens in colonial times when it was brought over from Europe. Achillea is a very old fashioned plant used since the days of the Greek hero Achilles (from whom the plant gets it’s name) who used it to help heal his soldiers. Achillea can stop bleeding and works incredibly well at healing wounds.

Achillea millefolium

Achillea has really pretty flattish clusters of small blooms that look rather like daisies. Achillea  come with flower heads in a selection of colors ranging from different shades of pinks, yellows and whites. Achillea ptarmica are considered by most gardeners to be considerably easy perennial garden fowers to cultivate. They are so simple to propagate because they are rather invasive plants which can be spotted growing on the poorest of ground. If you wish to see success with Yarrow the only thing is to avoid growing in boggy or poorly drained soil. The plants are fantastic at withstanding drought conditions. Achillea ptarmica and Achillea millefolium are two of the most often chosen varieties but there are various others available.

Landscape Design Ideas For a Practical and Beautiful Backyard!

When we think of backyard landscaping design today, global warming and the instability of summer and winter weather patterns has brought a new aspect into focus. No longer can we count on having plenty of water or typical summer and winter temperatures. When you’re planning your backyard landscaping designs, it’s wise to think of drought tolerant plants which will remain attractive despite unexpected heat waves or rationing of water.

Our busy schedules make it sensible to think of low maintenance solutions, while making the best use of space available in the back yard. Landscaping for practicality and beauty may seem like a tall order, but with careful planning, you can easily accomplish both objectives.

The backyard is typically where all the fun happens barbecues, play time for the children and other activities. Many families now plant a vegetable garden, both for the freshest organic produce and savings at the grocery store. Your back yard landscaping need not have an unattractive, utilitarian appearance just because you want function and beauty. Here’s how to approach the task and have both.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or doing a makeover of your existing landscaping, measure your back yard carefully, marking trees, pathways, decks and other garden features you aren’t planning on changing. Map it all out on graph paper.

If you have a large lawn, and you would like to put in a vegetable garden, raised beds are landscape idea. Just three 4′ x 4′ square beds are enough to supply the average family with all the veggies you can eat. A southern exposure is best. If you can situate your raised beds near the back fence, this is ideal, in terms of making the most of your back yard landscape design. Depending on your climate zone, you might consider an espalier along the fence to grow fruit trees. Garden netting, anchored a foot from the fence, makes an efficient area in which to grow garden peas, beans or a fabulous summer display of morning glories.

If you have kids, you’ll want to allocate space for a play area. Put your design with your space on paper, or with garden software, until you’ve found a plan that keeps kids out of the flower beds or trampling through your veggies!

If you have a deck or patio, this is probably where you’ll want outdoor furniture and the barbecue. Now is the time to think about lighting in your back yard landscaping design workup. A good lighting plan allows you to make better use of your back yard during those balmy summer evenings.

Consider how your design will look, viewed from indoors as well. Placing flower beds with this in mind doubles your enjoyment, as nice to see from inside as out. Ask us about drought tolerant, low maintenance annuals and perennials. Most ground covers satisfy both requirements. You’ll find many ground-hugging plants which tolerate foot traffic as well.

Making your own backyard landscaping design can be a lot of fun and bring you personal satisfaction too. When you’ve got your design worked out, pass it by your local nursery expert. These professionals may offer suggestions that will bring your plan to perfection. Once you’ve done your planting, all you need do is sit back and enjoy your efficient, yet lovely design!

How to Save Your Gardem Seeds For Next Year

A great way to get free flower seeds for next year is to pick seeds from your own flowers in the fall. After the flower blooms and dies back the seeds will form in the middle of the flower. When the seed pod is dried out but before it drops the seeds on the ground you should cut the stem of the flower and shake the seeds into a bag or on a newspaper. If they don’t come off easily you can rub the pods between your hands to get them to open up.

After gathering up the flower seeds you will need to let them dry out in the sun for a week or so. The best way to do this is to lay them out on newspaper in a sunny south facing window. You could do it outside but the seeds usually blow away outside. When you are sure the seeds are dry you can package them in a 2×3 inch zip lock bag. They are available at just about any craft store.

Try and get all the chaff and insects so you just have pure seeds. Make sure to label you bags and keep them out of the sun in a dry location until Spring. The flower seeds will keep until the next year or two so there is no hurry to use them up.

When spring comes you can get out your FREE seeds and decide where you want to plant them. It is a good idea to put them in the same conditions they grew so well in last year. If they were in the sun last year and did well don’t go sticking them in the shade this year. After a few years of doing this you will have a large amount of flower seeds on  hand every spring. You will only have to buy seeds when you see some new ones you don’t already have. Good Luck and Keep Gardening.

Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting plans have become an important part of the overall design of homes today. Homes are being designed with landscape lighting plans that accent the house and surrounding landscape without overpowering it. From the driveway entrance and pole lighting to the garden area with moonlights, a good landscape lighting plan will bring the overall home plan together.

Safety First

One of the main features lighting brings to the landscape is safety. Lighting allows visitors to see their way from the driveway to the front door. Path lighting allows family and friends to move freely about the garden without fear of falling.

Path lighting can be designed to be inconspicuous, low to the ground and soft in hue. This type of lighting is pleasant to the eye, adds enough illumination to see for walking and doesn’t annoy others in the neighborhood.

Moonlights are another nice option for path lights. These lights are created to look like moonlight. They can be purchased in heavy duty path stones that can endure lots of foot traffic. These soft lights are covered in a resilient plastic that protects the lights and adds to the glow.

Another safety feature lights can bring is security from intruders.  Floodlights positioned in darkened areas of the lawn and combined with motion detectors are great deterrents to would-be deterrents. Burglars tend to shy away from homes with ample lighting for fear of being discovered.

Outdoor Activities

Outdoor garden lighting allows for activities to continue outside, even after darkness falls. Warm summer evenings with friends gathered around the garden become more enjoyable with a good lighting design. Using lights to add to the theme of the evening or to highlight focal points is all part of a good design.

In addition to lighting for paths, tikki torches can be used to add ambience and a feel of the tropics. To continue the tropic feel, rope lighting can be draped in and around bushes and trees, adding the feeling of twinkling stars. Rope lighting can also be placed around the edges of tables or the pool to outline the objects.

Outdoor garden lighting can be used to spotlight water features in a unique manner. Using softly colored lighting, available in various hues, pools and ponds can be uniquely highlighted, for both safety and aesthetic purposes. Pool lighting creates interesting shadows that dance across the water.

Simply Understated

Outdoor landscape lighting plans do not have to ornate or complicated. Some homeowners might only want enough lighting added to show the way to the door and keep intruders at bay. Depending on neighborhood codes and home owner’s association rules, the lighting plan may have to be low-scale. This doesn’t mean that a good lighting plan can’t be designed.

Low-voltage, softer hues, and smaller lights can all be used to make a simple lighting design that enhances the home and yard without going overboard.

Regardless of the lighting plan, outdoor lighting is something all homeowners should consider for safety and enhancement to the home. Homeowners can design their own plan as they go or hire a professional landscape lighting designer to design it for them. Either way, the end result will light up the night.

A Japanese Landscape Design

Bamboo landscaping is actually quite appealing. For one thing, bamboo has long been a popular material used in gardening and landscaping but currently with so many people focusing on the environment, bamboo landscaping has skyrocketed. The reason is that bamboo is more like a grass than a tree. When bamboo is trimmed, it grows back fast.

While bamboo can be used in any garden, it is frequently incorporated in the making of a Japanese landscape design. For this type of garden, there are very particular elements and materials used. Furthermore, there are a variety of styles that can be built. With the dry garden, sand is used, raked carefully into patterns that reflect the rippling of waves. In the center of the “pond”, a rock is placed, which represents an island.

However, the most amazing styles for makinga making a Japanese garden landscape are plant life and water. This type of garden would generally have a small water fountain, which could include a waterfall, pond, or stream. As a part of the body of water you would think about adding a small bridge, a deer chaser, post light, and various types of plants such as water lilies..

Then, Japanese garden fences are also a eye pleaser, which are created from bamboo. These fences are used to create a sense of seclusion. The whole concept of the Japanese garden is balance of beauty and harmony. This is the one place where after a hectic day, you should be able to sit or walk, finding rest for the body, mind and spirit.

In Japan and even some of the bigger Japanese gardens in the US, a teahouse will be erected. Now, in creating Japanese landscaping, the teahouse doesn’t need to be big and complicated, just a small space where you can relax and take in the beautiful nature of the garden. In fact, several home improvement centers and gardening stores actually have kits for the do-it-yourselfer.

The bottom line is that while there are all types of gardens, it is difficult to beat the beauty found with a well planned Japanese garden. Incorporating bamboo landscaping, Japanese garden bridge, lots of trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as the other elements mentioned, the look would be finsihed. With the garden being finished, you are sure to be the envy of every other person in your neighborhood and for good reason.

Again, to gain a better understanding as to the making of a Japanese garden, you will find several excellent resources that can be used for reference.

Then, the internet is an abundance of information. While scanning, you can look at the various pictures, taking the different elements you like best and designing a garden based on personal preference, yard size, yard configuration, and budget..
