Plane Stupid protesters sentenced

22 protesters from the Stansted Airport protests have now been sentenced after the protests that shutdown Stansted Airport on December 8th 2008.

The group appeared at the Harlow Magistrate's Court and all pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated tresspassing.

Overall, 18 were ordered to so between 90 and 50 hours community service, a further 2 were given fines of £130 and £160, another was given a referral order and the final one was given a conditional discharge.

The sentences come after protesters caused £3000 worth of damage while breaking through the fence, chaining themselves to fencing, which caused the airport to close for 5 hours. During this time, 7000 passengers over a total of 57 cancelled flights, were left stranded, and a further 52,000 passengers were delayed.

However, because of all the cancelled flights and delays, Ryanair is claiming £2.2 million in compensation because of the loss of revenue that they suffered.

The protest was organised by the Stupid Plane group who planned it in an attempt to highlight the effect of aviation on the environment.

One protester called Joe Ryle, a sixth-form student, said: "It's pretty scary what's happening now. Most of us haven’t got any money and a fair few of us are at school and the ones at university already have big debts.”

“It seems if Ryanair follows this through and wins, we’ll be paying money to Michael O’Leary for decades, and all because we think our parent’s generation failed us so we decided to actually do something about climate change.”

In my opinion, good for Ryanair, for a company that is always lowering prices for it’s customers, why should they have to lose out if a group of protesters, which sound like a bunch of College and University kids can’t understand the consequences of breaking the law, Ryanair should explore every avenue open to them so that they can claim their money back.

Overall, the police charge 49 protesters, and released a further 8 on bail. Eight of the 49 were in court last month, and another 24 are due in court later this month.

Free parking offered by Air Southwest

The kind owners of Newquay Cornwall Airport and Air Southwest are helping customers to beat the credit crunch this January by offering free parking to all flyer's.

The airport has teamed up with Air Southwest who fly to 8 destinations all year round from Newquay Airport. The combined forces have created the offer until January 31st.

You may be wondering why it's such a great thing to get free parking at an airport because if you can afford to go away on holiday, then you can afford the parking, but if you are a regular business traveller that uses the car park, this could prove to be a great saving. Even if you're going on holiday, 5 days of free parking will save you around £30.

The parking offer is open to anyone that has already booked their flight or is going to book a flight before the end of January.

Karen Medweth, the head of commercial development at the airport said that the whole process would be simple. When you check in to your flight before January 31st, you will be given a voucher to claim your free parking.

This sounds like a great idea by Newquay Airport, but will this idea be spreading to some other airports? I would very much doubt it at places like Stansted, Heathrow or Gatwick, but maybe at smaller airports. However, it's always good to see other companies helping people save money during the credit crunch.
